I have held many roles with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. But the only role that matters most, truly is my connection with the people we serve. We at SSVP have the ability to think outside the box to help someone. The best part is being there to celebrate their successes and even being there to listen when they have had failures. I have learned far more about life by being connected to our “friends in need” then by not doing anything. Everyday is an adventure on the corner of Murray and Bethune. We wouldn’t have it any other way.
Working at a Vinnies thrift store has been an incredibly rewarding experience. Every day, I get to be a part of a community dedicated to making a difference. Sorting through donations, helping customers find hidden treasures, and knowing that our efforts directly support vital community programs is deeply fulfilling. The teamwork and camaraderie among staff and volunteers create a positive and encouraging environment. It’s more than just a job; it's a chance to give back and see the immediate impact of our work on people's lives. I’m proud to be part of such a meaningful cause and to contribute to a more sustainable and supportive community.
I started at St Peter's Cathedral Food Bank in 2001. I soon got a good understanding of what it was like to be poor. In need of a Job I went into the store on Bethune Street. It has been a gift and a pleasure to meet and work with clients, which has made me humble.
I have been a volunteer with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul for almost 10 years. Helping serves our communities vulnerable and less fortunate, was the best part of my week. If you are having a bad day, one day spent helping people who need us, will give you a very big piece of humble pie. To see these people go through adversity every day, and lots of them come out on the other side, is the very best moment to watch. The stories you hear, the things you witness, as we always say, “You can’t make these things up”, and knowing we are helping make a small difference in their lives, is worth every moment. Without charitable organizations such as SVDP, many people would have nowhere to turn. SVDP is making a huge dent in a very broken system.
I have been with SVDP for about 14 years as manager of the food pantry, as manager it has been very rewarding serving vulnerable members in our community. I work with incredible other employees and volunteers. We are a small group but manage to find humor in our daily workplace even when busy. It is very gratifying to serve the people in our community for those in need.
